Three Rams scored in double figures, but it wasn’t early enough to top White Castle, as the Bulldogs defeated the Rams 66-47 on Friday night at White Castle in a District 9-1A game.

Alton Joseph led West St. John (7-12, 1-1) with 18 points. Kaliff Gastreal scored 10, as did Terrance Nathan.

But White Castle (13-12, 2-0) rode a big game by guard Generra Varmall, who scored 24 points to lead all scorers.

“They shot it well from the outside,” said West St. John coach Antoine Edwards. “We switched out of our zone in the first half because we felt like we had to go to man to get back into the game. But we didn’t match up well.”

White Castle took a 32-23 lead into the locker room at halftime, and continued to build on their lead in the second half, outscoring WSJ 34-22 the rest of the way.

Edwards said that the problems his team faced stemmed from poor decisions on defense.

“We didn’t do a good job recognizing where we needed to be,” Edwards said. “We were getting burnt from the outside in the halfcourt. Compounding things, we didn’t shoot well, and didn’t get back in transition. We gave them easy layups too many times.

“When you don’t play good perimeter defense, you don’t shoot well and you don’t get back on defense…you see the results.”

Edwards said that when the players got back to practice Monday, everyone was committed to getting back on the same page.

“It’s just a matter of putting the pieces together. We’ve got to work on some things right now,” Edwards said.
