Happy Father’s Day to all dads

In the Bible is the story of the prodigal son, a less-than-perfect young man who returns home to the open arms of a loving father.

The boy had once rejected the father, yet on his return the father calls for a feast and celebration.

The parable of the prodigal son teaches us the importance of a lost sheep — or son or soul — finding his way back home. It also teaches us about fathers and their unwavering love for their children.

That love is what we celebrate Sunday on Father’s Day.

A mother’s love for her child is talked about openly; the mother’s love is deep, compassionate, strong. But fewer people want to talk about a father’s love that way.

But we should.

Fathers are, in many children’s lives, the family’s pillar of strength. They are a playmate, a coach, a teacher, a friend. Fathers are a role model who can teach young boys and girls about love, commitment, respect, faith and responsibility.

We should all remember that, especially this weekend.

Happy Father’s Day, Dads!
