Regardless of who you are, or what you do, everyone needs encouragement. When a person is encouraged, they receive a transfusion of courage. Encouragement is the necessary motivation that drives us to be the persons for which we were created.

I conduct a jail ministry in the St. John Correctional Center, which at times can be discouraging. Some people in authority continually tell me that I am wasting my time. However, I keep in mind that God’s Word never comes back void.

Two years ago, a young man from Texas serving a three-year sentence for marijuana possession with the intent to distribute attended his first Wednesday night “Get High on Life” meeting.

Last week, I received a card from him that read: “Your friendship is the seed that sprouts hope in my heart.” He wrote the following on the inside:

Mr. Keller,

How are you doing? I hope well in mind, spirit and health. I pray that in everything you do people may see the reflection of Jesus Christ. You stand boldly on His Word but humble yourself when you see someone in need because the secret to living is giving love and affection to one another.

The Harold Keller I know is young in spirit, full of energy and ready to go when it’s time to do God’s work. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. Well, in your case, I see that you’re very well connected in body and soul. I encourage you to continue doing what you are doing because I know that you’re touching many people’s hearts, including mine.

I was kind of doubtful whether I should go to your program. But as the months went by, I noticed that you were determined to make a change in somebody’s heart.

I thank you for everything you’ve done for us here at St. John Parish Correctional Center. It’s a real blessing to have you here with us.

This will be my last letter to you from this jail but not from the free world. I will stay in contact with you, and I will spread the word about our “Get High on Life” program all over Texas upon my release on June 1, 2010.

It’s been a long journey away from home for me, but you’ve guided me every step to the right path on my way home. May God bless you and your family with many more years to come, today, tomorrow and forever.
