HAMMOND – Matt Nobile led Riverside on Friday as a number of Rebel athletes shined at Hammond’s track and field meet.

Nobile won the boys’ 800-meter running event with a time of 2:08.54 to establish himself as Riverside’s top finisher.

“He’s doing a great job,” said Riverside coach Joe Trosclair of the junior. “He’s been running since his eighth-grade year, and he’s a guy that works real hard at it in practice. He’s lowering his time this year and this was his best effort yet.”

Heather Cancienne, Jamie Bolden and Shannon Simmons each captured second-place finishes in the girls’ events. Cancienne posted a time of 18.23 in the 100-meter hurdles. Bolden’s leap of 4-10 gave her second in the high jump, and Simmons hit a mark of 2:40 in the 800-meter run.

Maurie Laiche’s time of 27.52 allowed her to take third place honors in the girls’ 200-meter run. Raven Campbell’s 20-7 throw in the girls’ shotput and her discus throw of 85-0 established two third-place finishes for her, and Ryan Gonzales’ time of 17.75 in the boys’ 110 hurdles also slotted him in third.

“I thought we did really well,” said Trosclair. “We’re only a 2A school, and we were going against 5A competition. Most of our kids improved their times. Going into district, to put up a good showing against 5A schools now is a positive sign.”
