LAPLACE – Dog lovers from across St. John Parish will descend on Highway 51 Park in LaPlace Saturday afternoon in a show of support for local animal rescue organizations.
For the second consecutive year, the LaPlace Rotary club is hosting the Pups in the Park Walk at Highway 51 Park, located at 2900 Highway 51 in LaPlace. The event is promoted as a way to raise money for local animal rescue organizations and other animal-friendly causes in St. John Parish. Organizers said this year’s event has already attracted more sponsors and more participants.
“The Rotary Club has always appreciated the opportunity to host this event in the St. John area,” said club member Bill Ironside. “It is a great opportunity for the people of the parish to come out and raise money for animal rescue charities while also experiencing the camaraderie of like-minded people. It is also a good excuse to get outside and get some exercise.”
Events Saturday include a walk around the park track, canine demonstrations, a talent competition and a costume contest. There will also be awards and prizes for the cutest and ugliest dogs at the walk. Representatives from the St. John Animal Shelter will also be on hand displaying animals up for adoption in the parish.
Entry fee for the pup walk is $10. Registration begins at 11 a.m., and each entrant will receive a commemorative “doggie neckerchief.” Participation in all contests also requires a $10 fee, with all proceeds going to the animal rescue groups in the area.
