LAPLACE – The old field at the former Leon Godchaux Junior High School is on its way to resurrection.
St. John the Baptist Parish Recreation Board President Mike Tregre said the bleachers have been removed from the site, and he will meet with representatives from Entergy on Monday to inspect the wiring and utility pole and see what needs to be done to light the field.
Also on Monday, Tregre will meet with Floyd Luster of CSRS to find out specific costs associated with the different projects involved with refurbishing the field.
“We basically want to see what it’s going to take to get the field up and running by Labor Day,” said Tregre.
Tregre plans to approach the St. John the Baptist Parish School Board on Thursday with a more specific plan of action, and he is optimistic about the prospects for cooperation.
“Everyone seems to be on the same page,” he said.
He said he realizes not all projects will be able to be addressed immediately, but he does not want the issue “to fall on the backburner.”
For instance, until a permanent structure can be erected, concessions may be sold from a folding table.
Tregre also said once plans are firmed up a bit, the Recreation Board will be seeking sponsors for some essential items.
“That’s going to be a big part of what we’re trying to do,” he said. The board plans to primarily approach the region’s abundant industrial employers in this regard.
Finding sponsorships may not be a terribly tremendous task, however.
“I’ve been contacted by a lot of people wanting to know how to help,” said Tregre.
