. JAMES — St. James’ hopes of garnering its first win unraveled over a disastrous five minute period Friday night, as Patterson defeated the Wildcats 28-13 in a rematch of last year’s regional round matchup between the teams.
The Wildcats led 6-0 but saw that lead wiped out in the second quarter thanks to a string of three turnovers. After the Lumberjacks drove for a go-ahead score to take a 7-6 lead, a fumble by St. James quarterback Ben Falgoust followed by back-to-back lost fumbles by the Wildcats swung the game to Patterson. The Lumberjacks scored a touchdown off of each turnover to go ahead 28-6.
“We did everything wrong over that span. We played like a losing football team over those five minutes, and it was the difference,” said St. James coach Rick Gaille. “We dug ourselves a hole.”
St. James (0-4) took an early 6-0 lead when Hilton Narcisse recovered a fumble off of an errant Patterson snap. He’d return it 45 yards for a touchdown.
The Wildcats scored in the second half on a 78-yard touchdown pass from Falgoust to Alonzo Lewis. The St. James defense kept Patterson (2-2) off of the scoreboard over the rest of the night.
“In the second half, we showed that we are capable of going toe-to-toe with a strong Class 3A team,” said Gaille. “Now we need to start really believing that and eliminate these bad lulls. But our team played with a lot of aggressiveness, even when they had every reason not to (in the second half). It’s a matter of maintaining that level.”
Patterson has now defeated St. James three times over the last two seasons.
Lester Verret led St. James in rushing with 31 yards on 11 carries.
