RESERVE – A new, but familiar face to Riverside is stepping in to head up the school’s baseball program.

Matt White has been hired as the team’s head baseball coach. He replaces Britt Waguespack, who has coached the team for the past three seasons, including back-to-back finishes in the Class 2A quarterfinals.

White, 43, is a graduate of Riverside who coached the school’s softball team from 1995 to 2002, the last five years as its head coach. In his final season with the team, he led the Rebels to a state championship victory over Port Barre.

“We’re excited to have Matt taking over a very successful summer program left behind by Britt Waguespack,” said Riverside Athletic Director Timmy Byrd.

“Matt’s a high character guy with years of experience. He brings tremendous energy and a passion for getting the most out of these kids.”

Riverside principal Perry DiCarlo stressed that Waguespack was not replaced due to the team’s performance, but due to a certification issue. Once rectified, he said Waguespack would be welcomed back into the fold.

“We look forward to Britt finishing his degree and returning to Riverside,” said DiCarlo.

Waguespack was not immediately available for comment before presstime.

White was an assistant football coach and the head track coach at West St. John from 2002-2004.

But White put his prep coaching career on hold after 2004 to take care of his two young sons.

He’s worked as athletic director at R.K. Smith Middle School since then.

White said that while he had received several overtures to return to the prep ranks, the time was never right until now.

“I knew if Riverside ever called again, I’d be ready,” said White. “It was a no brainer.”

White said that he attended a basketball game at the school last season and came away impressed.

“I was overwhelmed,” said White. “There’s a lot of pride at Riverside.

“I know their goal is for the program to be as strong in all areas as it is in basketball, and I think we can contend here behind a lot of hard work.

“I think we’re going to have a heck of a school year, and the athletic program will certainly play a big part in that.”
