Celebrating the fight against crime

Tuesday night, communities all across the River Parishes, the state and the country will gather together in the annual event known as the National Night Out Against Crime. There will be parties, barbecues, games and neighbors getting together with neighbors to show their solidarity with local law enforcement.
The purpose of the event is not just fun and games. It is a time to for residents to meet members of the local law enforcement agencies.
Sheriff’s deputies will be going out to these parties, talking to people and making contact.
Knowing your local law enforcement officers and other first responders is one of the best ways to fight crime. When citizens and law enforcement personnel get to know each on a one-to-one basis, a strong bond develops that helps in the police preventing crime. It also breaks down barriers and stereotypical assumptions that can lead to misunderstanding and mistrust.
Police officials have always said community involvement is the best way to prevent crime, and Tuesday night’s event will go a long way in creating a trusting bond between residents and authorities.
So we urge everybody to join one of these parties and get to know the men and women who put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe. Learn what they are like as people, and know that crime prevention is not just the responsibility of law enforcement, but it is also our duty as citizens to help out. Have fun, share a laugh with a cop, get your children involved and show them that law enforcement is there to help them.
If you can’t get to a party, then show your support by turning your porch lights on to show solidarity and to make sure those that went to the parties will walk home in safety.
