LAPLACE – St. Charles moved to 3-0 in district play on Thursday with a 3-0 win at home over Houma Christian.

The win secured a Comets sweep of Houma Christian this season, after an 8-0 win on the road Jan. 6.

Andrew Brady, Ben Brady and Bradley Odom each scored goals for the Comets.

SCC led 1-0 at halftime after scoring 30 minutes into the game.

“They held up against us in that first half. We had 15 shots, but their keeper did a really nice job,” said St. Charles coach Bill Ballard.

The Comets (9-5-2) made it 2-0 15 minutes into the second half, and 3-0 with 15 minutes left in the match.

Ballard was pleased to come away with his team’s third district win but nonetheless called it an “average effort” after his team’s dominating win earlier in the month over HCA.

Ballard said he didn’t believe his players took Houma Christian lightly, but instead offered that the problem has been more of a general malaise over the majority of the past three games.

“I’d say over the last two and a half games, we’ve seemed to be in a lull,” he said. “Since the second half of the Ben Franklin game we just haven’t had the same crispness to us. Haven’t put my finger on why as of yet … I know we’ve got some kids out sick, some out injured … but we talked about it (Sunday) night. The big point we made was that against good teams, you have to play at a high level for the entire game, not just a half here or there.”

Ballard said his players seemed to concur and that the Comets had a strong practice Monday night.

Tuesday, his team was slated to face E.D. White in LaPlace for a crucial district contest. SCC will also face E.D. White next Tuesday.

But St. Charles has already achieved one goal this season: the Comets have iced their first winning season since the 2007-08 season.

“We’re excited about it,” sad Ballard.

“Now, it’s just a matter of fighting through adversity.”
