Last weekend, spring rolled in quietly, especially in the South, where temperatures have been spring-like for several weeks.

It was easy to overlook. Japan was reeling from the after-effects of a massive earthquake and tsunami, an event that has now been called the costliest natural disaster of all time. Tensions in the Middle East erupted into

full-blown, multi-national military maneuvers. On the home front, unrest among labor unions, a painfully slow recovery

from recession and continued petty bickering between Republicans and Democrats have done nothing to ease the burdened mind.

But spring in the figurative sense is much more than a way to mark the passing of time. It is an occasion for rebirth and renewal.

“Spring cleaning” generally refers to cleaning one’s home, but spring can also be a good time to cleanse the mind.

Color has begun to return to the landscape, and playgrounds are once again filled with the sound of laughter. These factors make the great outdoors the ideal place for forgetting the troubles of the world.

Luckily, here in the River Parishes there is no lack of outdoor activities to help one escape.

Today, the Rotary Club of LaPlace is once again holding Pups in the Park, which besides celebrating of local dogs and their owners also raises funds for the St. John Animal Shelter. The festivities begin at 10 a.m. at Highway 51 Park in LaPlace.

On the other side of the river in Vacherie, Oak Alley Plantation is holding its annual Spring Arts and Crafts Fair. Gates for the popular event open at 9 a.m. today and tomorrow.

So this weekend get out and enjoy the people and places that make the River Region the unique place that it is. The world can wait until Monday.
