Throwing out tires and branches

It doesn’t matter what parish you live in there is always a litter problem.

St. John the Baptist Parish has some litter but not really as bad as other places. We here in St. John shouldn’t have any. SWeeDee Solid Waste Disposal picks up almost everything you throw away, so why throw it on the side of the road. SWeeDee, however, doesn’t pick up tires or tree branches. If you have tires bring them to the recycling center located behind the Sheriff’s Office in LaPlace. Any questions about recycling call 985 652 6765.

If you would rather throw your used tires on the side of the road read this first.

Title 33- 10519-E-1

It is unlawful for any person to dispose, discard, burn or otherwise release waste tires to the environment in a manner in contravention to the Louisiana Solid Waste Regulations. A fine of $25,000 per day per violation may be imposed on any company or individual who violates these regulations.

That is $25,000 per tire, and we enforce this law. If you have tree branches, just call the parish to get them picked up. If you have any questions about your garbage pickup call SWeeDee at 536-2750.

If you have piles of tree branches, you must call the parish and notify them at

985-652-4815. If you have some type of litter problem please call Lt. Wayne Norwood at 985-652-7058. Help me keep our parish clean.

Wayne Norwood is a lieutenant with the St. John the Baptist Sheriff’s Department and owner and operator of the Louisiana Treasures Museum.
