HAHNVILLE – A LaPlace grandmother was arrested Thursday by St. Charles Sheriff’s Deputies and charged with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile after allegedly failing to seek treatment for her granddaughter who was attacked by a dog.

Deputies were called to River Parishes Hospital in LaPlace on May 8 after a handicapped 6-year-old girl from Hahnville was brought into the emergency room with severe cuts on her face. Capt. Pat Yoes, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office, said the injuries were consistent with a dog attack.

Yoes said Lynda Bowman, 67, was dog- and house-sitting for her son in Hahnville and was watching her granddaughter on May 7 when the injuries occurred. He said when Bowman returned the girl to her mother later that day there was a large bandage on the child’s face.

According to a report on the incident, Bowman told the mother that the girl had been climbing on outdoor chair when the chair fell over causing the injuries to her face. Yoes said Bowman did not disclose the true nature of the injury, nor did she seek any medical attention for the dog bite, which showed signs of infection.

Yoes said Bowman turned herself in at the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center in Killona, where she is being held on a $50,000 bond.
