RIVER RIDGE — Even when it seems Riverside-based Fatty’s Restaurant lost a bit of momentum this past weekend, the summer baseball squad found something to build off of.
Though Fatty’s fell to John Curtis and E.D. White’s summer-league teams at Curtis’ summer tournament, it notched perhaps its signature win of the summer by defeating Livonia’s summer team, 7-4, on Saturday.
Livonia was the Class 3A champion during the prep season.
“We played about as well as we can play,” said Fatty’s Restaurant coach Matt White. “We turned four double plays in the first six innings. I was very impressed by our effort, and we were able to get a number of our younger kids playing time in the last couple of innings.
“We took it as a challenge,” he continued. “We knew they won it last year and that they had a lot of guys coming back. So I told our guys, “We’ve got our hands full.” But we put it all together. It was a special win, if you can have one during the summer.”
Wren Vicknair notched the win, pitching 4.1 innings of shutout ball. Trevor Kenney pitched the rest of the way in relief. Livonia scored its four runs with one out in the seventh inning, after Fatty’s Restaurant (7-4) built a 7-0 lead. Livonia took advantage of a Fatty’s error and hit back-to-back home runs of its own in the frame.
Vicknair and C.J. Edler hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning to set the tone for Fatty’s. Vicknair collected three RBIs on the day.
Fatty’s led 8-4 against Curtis, but the district-rival Patriots’ summer team rallied to capture a 10-8 victory.
Grady Gieger had two RBIs and went 2 for 3 at the plate. Trevor Kenney also collected a two-RBI double.
Edler took the loss on the mound.
E.D. White defeated Fatty’s in the final game of the weekend, 13-1.
Fatty’s went 3-1 on the previous weekend at the E.D. White tournament, defeating St. Thomas Aquinas, 7-3, Catholic-New Iberia, 7-1, and an H.L. Bourgeois and Covenant Christian Academy-based team from Houma, 11-1. Fatty’s fell to E.D. White 11-3.
Gieger had a huge weekend, going 8 for 9 and collecting 10 RBIs over the 4 games.
