Early this week, I drove Jeanne to get her annual mammogram. Over the years, she’s had a couple of surgeries as the result of the mammograms. One such surgery discovered the early stages of cancer. After a successful operation and 35 radium treatments, she was cured.

We are so grateful for modern medicine and especially for the test that reveals the signs of cancer. If diagnosed early, cancer can be defeated.

The problem with breast cancer is that too many women refuse to have regular examinations.

October is known as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to an ad in this newspaper by River Parishes Hospital, every year nearly 200,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with breast cancer.

With that in mind, the hospital is sponsoring a Pink Lady Luncheon and Fashion Show on Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, at noon at the Belle Terre Country Club at 111 Fairway Drive in LaPlace. The special guest speaker is Dr. Rachel Bezdek, OB/GYN. Fashions will be by David Lee’s Boutique.

People are asked to wear something pink to show their support for the fight against breast cancer. Reservations are required as space is limited. Please call 985-653-4247 to make your reservation. A donation of $10 includes lunch, speaker and fashion show. Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.

It promises to be not only educational but a relaxing time for a good cause.
