Young area athletes sacrifice for their sports

It is true the eyes of most football fans in the area will be glued to the Saints game tomorrow afternoon. But while the Saints are on the road facing the Tennessee Titans in Nashville, many football fans in the River Parishes will have their eyes on the Superdome for an entirely different reason.

Two high school football teams from St. John the Baptist Parish made it to the championship games in their respective divisions. This weekend the West St. John Rams and the St. Charles Catholic Comets are playing for all the marbles in the Superdome.

The Rams played yesterday afternoon and the Comets are playing today at 3 p.m.

And while nothing can quite beat the thrill of taking home the title, just the fact that these young athletes made it to the Dome speaks volumes about their commitment and dedication to excellence.

These young take on an awesome responsibility when they sign up for after-school athletics. Not only must they keep their grades up to

a certain standard, but they spend countless hours on the field after class running drills and practicing plays so they can reach their destination — the Dome in December.

So to these young men and indeed all the student athletes of the River Parishes, we say good luck and congratulations. You are a big part of what makes the River Parishes great.
