RESERVE – As part of last week’s Destrahan/East St. John Cox Game of the Week, the two schools were asked to collect canned goods for the Second Harvest Food Bank, which serves the River Parishes and other parishes.

East St. John High School took this challenge seriously. The students and staff at East St. John High School not only wanted to beat Destrehan High but wanted also wanted to exceed the total of the highest pounds of food ever donated by a school. That total was 6,500 pounds.

“When I found out that the school who had previously donated the most had 6,500 pounds, I challenged our students to donate even more to help our community and those communities around us,” stated Principal Patricia Triche. “I never imagined that we would top that total by almost 3,000 more pounds. I am so proud of the generosity of our students and our parish as a whole.”

East St. John High School now hold the record for the most canned goods ever donated by one school at a whopping 9,182 pounds.

When the Second Harvest Food Truck arrived to pick up the canned goods which filled the floor of a 20 by 20 room of the field house, the driver had only brought six palettes to hold six 3 by 3 cardboard boxes. Needless to say, not only did the canned goods exceed the number of boxes, it filled up the truck from the front to the back.
