As we go through life, God allows us to be challenged in many areas of our lives. One of the biggest challenges for me was the fact that I had no control in my daughters’ decisions as they chose with whom to live the rest of their lives.

My daughter, Kay, really tested me as a teenager. When I speak and give my testimony, I say that Kay was so much like me, it was hard for me to like her. It bothered me so much I went to her high school counselor and shared my concerns. The counselor said, “Of your four children, Kay is the most stable.” Being a heavy drinker at the time, that remark made me feel like having a drink.

A couple of years after finishing high school, Kay married Tony Serven (not my choice), a young renegade from Florida. The first five years of their marriage, he and I had a rough time, to say the least.

After one of our heated discussions, he bought a sign that read “Father-in-law in Trunk” and hung it on the rear window of the car

I’m happy to report that after 30 years of marriage, four children, and two grandchildren, Tony and I have a good relationship.

He is a hard worker, and the people that meet Tony really like him.

Tony also plays hard. He spends more time on the golf course than the majority of players on the PGA tour. Tony also has a ring for bowling a perfect 300 game.

Two weeks ago, while playing golf at the Riverlands Country Club, he made a hole-in-one on the 11th green. That is the ultimate stroke for a golfer and impresses even people that know very little about the game. Tony was excited about his hole-in-one, and I have to admit that I was happy and proud of my son-in-law.

It was a long time coming, but today Tony and I have a good relationship because we both needed to change a little.

The Bible says that iron sharpens iron. Tony really sharpened me up.
