Worshipping God with true spirit

In 1992, while speaking to a group of St. Charles Parish employees, I met Dwight Boyd, a young man sharply dressed. He looked like he was a model for Rubenstein Brothers, a classic men’s store. I complimented him on his appearance. We hit if off pretty good and through the years have crossed paths on occasions.

A few weeks ago, Dwight called and invited me to share a few words at Mt. Airy Baptist Church of Boutte. He was in charge of a special Sunday night program with the theme “Am I my Brother’s Keeper?’

It was advertised as 100 men in black, with the purpose of bringing 100 men together in unity to stir up and make them aware of their Christian duties outside the church walls. It was to challenge the men to set an example in their daily walk.

The service began at 6 p.m. and lasted almost three hours. If it sounds like a long time, it was, but believe me, it was inspiring, entertaining and, most of all, the Word of God was preached in a way that His Word will not come back void.

The praise and worship by the church’s male choir was excellent. To perform in that group you had to be in good physical shape. They really got into it. Bro. Harold Jackson, a deputy with the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Department, blessed the packed church with a couple of instrumental solos. He was great!

I shared for 10 minutes and said it was a pleasure to be with a congregation that knew how to dress when entering the House of God. I told the men that years ago I saw a few bumper stickers that read “Real Men Love Jesus.” It really wasn’t a popular bumper sticker because either there were not many bumper stickers printed or maybe just a shortage of real men.

I encouraged the church to get excited about their salvation. Many people are saved and going to Heaven but because of their lack of joy, will not lead others to the Promised Land.

Minister Mark Lewis of Progressive Baptist Church in Lafayette gave the sermon on Psalm 37: verses 23 through 31. It was a message I needed to hear.

Pastor John H. Vaultz closed with the message that as Christians, we are all in the same Spirit.

My friend Dwight did an excellent job organizing and carrying out the program. I was blessed to be a small part of a great service!
