Without self-discipline there will be destruction

A man without self-discipline is like a city without walls. That warning comes from the Bible scripture that reads: “He that has no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down and without walls” (Proverbs 25: 28).  The explanation given is that he who cannot bridle his passion and emotions is like a city that’s been destroyed.

In Biblical times, cities had strong, tall walls to protect them from being invaded and destroyed. Cities without walls of protection were easily defeated by the enemy.

“How does that relate to me?” one might ask.

The hedge or wall of protection of a person should begin in early childhood. Parents are the biggest influence on a child. The church, school and family are also a factor in developing the moral character of a young person, hopefully building a wall of protection from self-destruction.

Most of early childhood discipline is imposed discipline. If the child rebels, they can be punished. Imposed discipline will correct wrong actions but may not change the person’s attitude. Only self-discipline will protect one from making bad choices and being defeated by the enemy.

Personally, I was blessed with good parents and a church and schools that built a wall of protection for me. The problem came for me with my lack of self-discipline that caused me and my family much grief. I thank God that because of my early imposed discipline and His grace, I was able to recover from near self-destruction.

A good example of how imposed discipline will not cover up for

the lack of self-discipline happen-

ed in Cartagena, Colombia, last month.

If allegations are true, 11 Secret Service men and several members of the military consorted with prostitutes prior to the president’s arrival. The Secret Service, an honorable organization, trusted to protect the president and responsible for national security, had a breakdown in their personal self-discipline.

Not one of the group had the

wisdom to say, “Let’s not do this.” What a black eye given to the Secret Service, but more tragic is the

terrible pain caused to the innocent family members. What a shameful example of men without self-discipline being defeated and embarrassed.
