RESERVE — Grady Gieger collected five RBIs and Tate Scioneaux allowed just one baserunner in four no-hit innings to lead Riverside to a first round, bi-district playoff victory over Many, 10-0.

The game ended after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

The Rebels advanced to the regional round to face Sterlington, which upset Lakeside in the first round. Sterlington was scheduled to host Riverside Tuesday, after press time.

Riverside (22-9) scored four runs in the second inning, one in the third, two in the fourth and three in the fifth to close things out.

“The plan was to get an early lead and get Tate out of there,” said Riverside coach Matt White. “We jumped on them a little and put some runs on the board. We got a cushion and that let everyone kind of relax a bit.”

Gieger continued a scorching season against Many (13-12), going 2-for-4 at the plate.

“He had a huge, huge game,” said White. “He got us going early.”

Scioneaux helped his own cause with a two-run home run in the fourth. He finished 2-for-3.

On the mound, Scioneaux struck out seven batters before Ryan Broussard relieved him in the fifth, throwing a perfect inning to close things out.

Broussard, White said, assumed the second spot in the Rebel rotation with his performance during the regular season.

“He’s been getting it done for us. He’s got three different pitches that work for him, and he’s a good compliment to Tate. Tate’s a guy that overpowers you, while Ryan uses a very good breaking ball to set up his fastball.”

But White said that the team will ride Scioneaux as far as he can take them.

“In our classification, there should be four or five days between playoff games, so we’re going to rely on him. He’s been our horse all year long.”
