LAPLACE — St. Charles Catholic won its season soccer opener over St. Thomas Aquinas, but fell to a pair of tough foes last week to fall to 1-2 on the season.

The Comets traveled to undefeated Belle Chasse Friday and lost 3-1, three days after a close loss in their home opener Tuesday to defending Division III state champion Country Day, 1-0.

Mike Robert scored the Comets’ lone goal against Belle Chasse.

The team’s 3-2 win in its opener came over a St. Thomas Aquinas team that was a Division III state semifinalist last season.

In that game, Albert Hane scored two goals and Keegan Casadaban added another to power the Comet attack.

“We’ve seen some positive things,” said St. Charles coach Sean LeBlanc, who has just begun his first season at the helm of the Comet program. “We’re young and inexperienced, but they’ve shown a lot of will so far.”

LeBlanc said that the win over St. Thomas Aquinas was a great way to kick off the new season, but cautioned that his team still has much work to do.

“It’s more of a character builder than anything,” he said. “It’s a solid measuring stick, but at the same time it’s one game, and we’ve got 20 left.”

One of those remaining games comes tonight: SCC will host Northlake Christian at 6 p.m. The Wolverines are another stout foe and will represent the third team from last season’s Division III final four that the Comets have faced this season. Northlake Christian was state runner-up last season after falling to Country Day in the state championship game.
