Juanita Hughes Etheridge, lovingly known as “Red” to families and friends, died on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013, at Twin Oaks Nursing Home in LaPlace, after a lengthy illness of dementia and Parkinsons. Born to William Harrison and Vesta Lorina Williams Hughes in Seminary, Miss., on Oct. 14, 1923, she made Winnsboro her home for over 50 years.
She was a 1941 graduate of Seminary High School. On March 14, 1948, she married James Burks Etheridge Jr. She became a member of First United Methodist Church in Winnsboro, where she was active with the United Methodist Women and a member of the church choir. Red worked as a nurse and a dental assistant at Dr. Roger Arnold’s office for more than 20 years. She enjoyed poetry, music, beautiful flowers and quilting.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son James Burks “Buddy” Etheridge III and four brothers: W.M. Hughes, John Q. Hughes, George C. Hughes and Guycell Hughes.
Red is survived by her daughter, Ione Etheridge Bean, and husband, Ralph, of LaPlace; two grandsons, Christopher DeSha Etheridge and wife, Holly, of Grayson and R. Collins Bean Jr. and wife, Tamara Murray, of The Woodlands, Texas; one brother, Franklin Hughes of Seminary; two sisters, Ethel Merle Magee of Winnsboro and Madeline Hughes of Seminary; one great-granddaughter, Lilly Grace Etheridge of Grayson; numerous other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers will be Tim Calk, Dale Etheridge, Sha Etheridge, Boots Hughes, Jay Neal and Mark Whitney.
Services will be held Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, at noon at Gill First National Funeral Home. Interment will follow in New Winnsboro Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a local church’s Mission Fund or Winnsboro First United Methodist Building Fund – 1502 West Street, Winnsboro.
