75-year-old pedestrian dies in car crash while crossing Airline Highway in LaPlace

A 75-year-old woman died Saturday night after she was hit by a vehicle while attempting to cross Airline Highway in LaPlace, according to Louisiana State Police.
Authorities identified the victim as 75-year-old Rose Mary Valentine of LaPlace. The crash was reported about 9:30 p.m. on Airline near the intersection of Carrollwood Drive, State Police said.
Valentine was in the northbound lanes of Airline Highway when a 2018 Nissan Rogue hit her. According to State Police, the driver of the Rouge was traveling southbound on Airline but made a U-turn to head north.
According to authorities, Valentine was wearing dark-colored clothing and was outside a designated crosswalk at the time of the crash. She was transported to a hospital but succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the Rogue was unharmed, and State Police reported that the individual showed no signs of impairment. The crash remains under investigation.
State Police reminded pedestrians to always use caution when crossing or walking near roadways.
Pedestrians should walk against the direction of traffic to see oncoming vehicles. Pedestrians are also encouraged to wear brightly colored clothing or use reflective accessories in low-light conditions and at night to increase visibility for motorists.
