Warming centers to open in St. John the Baptist Parish ahead of winter weather

With temperatures dropping dangerously low, St John the Baptist Parish have announced warming centers will be opened from Monday, January 20, 2025, at 6:00 p.m with an extension possible for the duration of the winter event.
The centers include West Bank Public Safety Complex 5739 Highway 18, Wallace, LA and Garyville Fire Station #71 418 Historic West St., Garyville, LA.
The shelters are open to St. John the Baptist Parish residents. Cots and blankets will be available, authorities are asking people to bring additional blankets, food, and snacks.
Temperatures are expected to drop to dangerous levels Monday night and throughout the week.
The National Weather Service, NWS forecasts an arctic cold front to move across the area, bringing frigid temperatures with a slight chance of snow. NWS has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Monday night through Tuesday evening and Cold Weather Advisory Sunday night and Monday night through Tuesday.
Authorities are asking people to bring their pets inside. Cats and dogs can get frostbite and hypothermia, and the expected temperatures can be just as dangerous for them.
