St. Charles Parish President Matthew Jewell, local officials, and community leaders gathered recently to celebrate the groundbreaking of renovations to Bethune Park, located at 301 Bethune Street in Norco. These renovations will be the first significant upgrade to the facility in 25 years.
“The total renovation of Bethune Park emphasizes the quality that we are focused on building
within our Parks and Recreation system,” President Matthew Jewell said. “Shell Norco and its leaders, Emma Lewis and Tammy Little, are making a huge impact on our community with their
donation, and I am grateful for their dedication to the residents of St. Charles Parish.”
Phase I of the project will include a basketball court, pavilion, new lights around the fields, new
fencing, sail shades that cover the bleachers, improved drainage and signage in remembrance
of Bethune High School. The first phase is projected to be completed at the beginning of 2025.
Shell Norco has committed a $500,000 donation for Phase II of the project which will include a
new accessible playground and a covering for the basketball court. These additional amenities
will be installed after the completion of Phase I.
“Bethune Park is a historical landmark in the Norco community,” Norco General Manager
Tammy Little said. “These much-needed upgrades will create the spaces and places where our
employees, friends and neighbors can cheer for ball games, enjoy a weekend picnic or
celebrate important milestones. Shell Norco celebrated its 90th anniversary at Bethune Park
and five years later, we’re thrilled to partner with local officials to recognize the park’s legacy and
ensure its longevity for decades to come.”
Murray Architects designed Phase I of the Bethune Park Renovations, and The Parks and
Recreation Ad Valorem tax will fund about 60 percent of the total cost, or $683,221.20.
Shell Norco’s donation will fund the final 40 percent and complete Phase II.
“The renovations to Bethune Park are going to be great for the community of Norco,” Director
Duane Foret said. “This long-awaited project will benefit Norco Booster Club, and we are excited
to provide the residents with an updated place to gather for recreational activities where they
can make new memories with their families.”
