MT. AIRY – Responders with the State Fire Marshal’s Office are at the scene of a house fire in Mt. Airy involving at least two deaths, including a child.
At approximately 4 a.m. Wednesday, the St. John Parish Fire Department was alerted to a fire in the 100 block of Marigold Street in Mt. Airy.
As of 8:30 a.m., the bodies of an adult and a child have been recovered from the house.
Ashley Rodrigue, spokesperson from the State Fire Marshal’s Office, said there is a possibility at least one other victim is still inside of the two-story house.
“There was a structural collapse element to the fire, so at this point, they have not been able to finish searching the house,” Rodrigue said. “They had to bring in special equipment to get that piece of the house moved so they can finish searching, so they haven’t gotten very far at all.”
The scene remains active, and the investigation is in its early stages.
More information will be released as it becomes available.
