BATON ROUGE–4-H University, formally called 4-H Short Course, allows eighth through twelfth-grade 4-H members to experience college life and compete on a state level. Nine 4-H members from St. John Parish attended this year’s event at LSU.

Xavier Bell, St. John Parish 4-H Agent, said, “4-H University is an experience that all eligible youth should take advantage of.” The event allows young people to live in a college dorm, attend educational workshops, and meet other 4-H’ers from the entire state. On top of the educational workshops, youth could compete in various contests or Clover College, which is a non-competitive option.

St. John 4-H had two youth compete at this year’s event; Sarai Gaines, Fashion – Ready to Wear, and Amaya Wilson, Tiger Tank Entrepreneurship Challenge. Wilson was a blue-ribbon winner of those two by placing third and receiving $50.

The remaining 4-H members who made up the St. John delegation chose to participate in the following Clover College session: Forensics, 2D & 3D Drafting, How to Become a “Dogtor”: Veterinary Science, and Experience FranU. These sessions allowed members to learn more about each specific career.

4-H University allows young people to get a sense of what it is like to attend college and network with individuals within their potential careers, said Bell, and he is looking forward to having more youth from St. John Parish experience this great event.
