Baton Rouge – – Louisiana Stop Solitary Coalition is hosting Advocacy Day at the Capitol.
Join us Thursday, May 25, at 9 AM to support the Louisiana Stop Solitary Coalition.
Advocacy Day is the opportunity for advocates and coalitions from across the state to help people recover from the criminal legal system at the Louisiana State Capitol with their elected officials.
This event aims to advance policies impacting laws and focus on ending solitary confinement in the state of Louisiana by 2028. Solitary confinement is a cruel and inhumane practice that has no place in the rehabilitation of individuals. It inflicts severe psychological and emotional harm that will only worsen their condition. Let us put an end to this barbaric method and embrace more effective and humane alternatives. Individuals will be engaged at the capitol around legislative advocacy and social justice advocates provided with an opportunity to educate legislators about expungement filing obstacles and other significant barriers individuals and families face.
Date: Thursday, May 25, 2023
Time: 9 AM until 2 PM
Location: LA State Capitol, 900 North Third Street, Baton Rouge, LA Press Conference at noon on LA State Capitol steps
The Justice & Accountability Center of Louisiana facilitates the Louisiana Stop Solitary Coalition
(www.lastopsolitary.org) and works in collaboration with solitary survivors, advocates, family members of the incarcerated, faith leaders, and concerned community members to end solitary confinement by 2028. Solitary confinement is a public health emergency and a humanitarian crisis. There are moral, ethical, and legal obligations to end it and in 2022, with Representative Duplessis, we successfully passed legislative bill HB746 limiting solitary confinement for juveniles in Louisiana.
