LAPLACE — The LaPlace Lions Club has begun putting the finishing touches on its annual golf tournament, slated for March 17 at Riverlands Country Club. It’s the 15th time the Lions have held it. This year, revenue from the Charity Golf Classic will be donated to support the annual Lions’ Camp for physically and mentally challenged Louisiana children.
Trinity Jacobs, who has attended the camp near Alexandria, will be the honorary Course Marshall and help start the tournament.
It’s one of several things the local Lions support each year. Other efforts include annual contributions to the Lions Eye Foundation, free annual CubSight evaluations for eye illnesses at area preschools, and a collection box at CVS Pharmacy for old and outdated glasses, which can be repurposed for other people.
The club also offers grants to pay for a number of local services like free swimming lessons for children and the Therapeutic Riding Center, where handicapped people can experience horseback rides while also getting physical therapy, plus offering service grants to high school and college students to help cover the cost of uniforms, books or other educational expenses.
It’s all a part of the Lions International motto, “We Serve.”
LaPlace Lions Club President Stephen Flynn said the annual golf tournament is “our primary fundraiser. The proceeds go a long way to our annual donation to the Louisiana Lions Camp and the Louisiana Eye Foundation. Over the years, we have sent countless campers and patients, too.”
Registration for the four-man scramble starts at 10:30 a.m. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m., and the shotgun start is at 12:30 p.m.
The entry fee is $90 per player, and hole sponsor signs are available for $100.
Participants in the Golf Classic and members of the public are invited to join the St. Paddy’s Day Social Third Street Band Silent Auction from 6 to 9 p.m. inside the clubhouse.
