Keller: Abortion ruling remains issue of importance

On Jan. 22, 1973, the United States Supreme Court ruled in the Roe vs. Wade case. That decision declared abortions legal.
It’s been 42 years and although abortion is legal, the issue has not been settled in the minds of the people.
Many politicians — Democrats, Republicans and Independents — would like for it not to be an issue every election.
Why? Because, according to God, it’s a matter of life and death.
I’m a registered Republican because of its pro-life stand, but vote independent of party labels.
Many of my political friends accuse me of being a single issue (pro-life) voter.
That’s not accurate.
I’m also against stem cell research, human cloning, euthanasia and same-sex marriages. These five issues, according to God’s Word, are non-negotiable.
I’m pro-life without reservations. I can’t understand how a person can claim to be a Christian and pro-choice. I can understand how someone can justify any wrong, even if it’s against God’s Word.
I’ll never forget during the campaign for president, Barack Obama and John McCain were invited to Rick Warren’s church in California.
The abortion issue was raised and this question was asked: At what point does a baby get human rights?
McCain said, convincingly, “At conception.”
Obama replied that the question was “above my pay grade.”
Tony Perkins, who heads the Family Research Council said, “That may go down in history as the most inappropriate statement ever made by a presidential candidate other than, ‘I didn’t inhale,’ which was made by former President Clinton.”
Last week, a group of 23 St. Charles High School students and two teachers went to Washington, D.C. to observe the 42nd anniversary of that horrendous decision and to pray for the millions of unborn babies destroyed in their mothers’ wombs.
The school has sponsored the trip for a few years. Two of my granddaughters made the trip while they were in school. I pray they never forget the experience.
A few years ago, in Scranton, Penn., Bishop Joseph Martino ordered every priest in the diocese to read a letter warning that voting for a supporter of abortion rights amounts to endorsing “homicide.” I agree.
