EDGARD — West St. John faced the Lutcher Bulldogs in a packed gym Friday December 16, 2022, at West St. John High School’s Gym.

Lutcher jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter.

“My first time seeing the Lutcher Middle School team in person, I immediately recognized their depth and size,” Rams Coach Courtney Evans said. “During Lutcher’s first quarter run, we seem to have a hard time adjusting to the size of their team.”

At the half, the score was 10-4 with Lutcher on top. In the second half, Evans instructed the team to put more pressure on the Lutcher guards as soon as they crossed halfcourt, which at times made it very difficult for them to execute their offense.

Jajuan Jackson was huge in the second half through his rebounding and scoring along with a huge three-pointer, which allowed West St. John to take the lead for good during the fourth quarter.

J’kyren Morris, De’Avonii Bartholomew, Kadyn Smith and Dai’Shadd Waxter have played huge roles on this team all year long, according to Evans.

“Our team each week is getting better on executing their offensive sets and taking it personally to shut down opponents on the defensive end as much as possible,” he said. “I am super proud of how the team competes each week, but like I informed them, to keep winning, we must continue to practice, correct mistakes and play as a unit.”

Evans shared the following quote with his team: “A basketball team is like the five fingers on your hand. If you can get them all together, you have a fist. That’s how I want you to play” -Mike Krzyzewski

The middle school team entered this week with a 9-1 record, preparing to face John L. Ory at home.
