LAPLACE — St. Charles played a trio of games at last week’s Episcopal tournament, beating False River, 41-24, but falling to Episcopal and Dunham, 40-18 and 32-24, respectively.
“I thought it was a good opportunity for us to face teams and programs at a different level than what we’ve seen so far,” St. Charles coach Meghan Ericksen said.
“I thought we played OK. Coming off of Christmas and getting everyone back from the holiday, I was happy with how hard they played.”
In the False River victory, Lela Hill led the way for the Comets (7-5), as she would throughout the tournament. Hill finished with nine points and seven rebounds. Caroline Julian added seven points and four rebounds, while Maddie Cochran notched six points and one rebound.
The Comets led in the second half against Dunham, but couldn’t hold on for the win. Hill scored 11 points. Julien had five points and four rebounds.
“I thought we played pretty tough,” Ericksen said.
“Toward the end, we kind of fell apart in our execution. We’ll learn from that.”
Against Episcopal, Hill notched nine points and collected two rebounds. Cochran added five points.
“We played pretty well defensively, but shots weren’t falling,” Ericksen said.
She said Hill and Julian have each asserted themselves on the floor this season, noting Julien, a freshman guard, has burst onto the scene early.
“She’s just a strong all-around athlete,” Ericksen said. “She’s a team player and she’s done a good job getting the ball to everyone. We’ve been pretty happy with her.”
