LAPLACE — Kayla Mitt’s dream of becoming a business owner started when she was a little girl with an Easy Bake Oven. Now she is the owner of Angelique’s Baking Co., located in the TPP Plaza at 2859 E. Highway 20 in Vacherie.
A grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony on August 21 coincided with Mitt’s birthday, and it was the perfect way to celebrate overcoming years’ worth of challenges to turn her dream into a reality.
Mitt started planning to open the bakery in 2019, while she was on bedrest for a high-risk pregnancy. Her mother, Angelica Jeffrey, never left her side despite battling her own health issues at the time.
“My mom was taking care of me, and she was very resilient because she was recovering from a stroke. She was still going to physical therapy and still trying to take care of me,” Mitt said. “That’s why I named the business after her.”
Supply chain and labor shortages resulting first from the COVID-19 pandemic and later Hurricane Ida presented additional delays to opening. Angelique’s Baking Co. finally made its debut with a soft opening on August 14. In the past two weeks, Mitt has already gained a following of regular customers who enjoy sweet treats and a laidback atmosphere.
“The community has come out and shown tremendous support,” Mitt said. “I’m already seeing this as an area for the community to socialize in a calm and welcoming setting. It offers something different in Vacherie.”
Angelique’s Baking Co. offers donuts, beignets, a selection of pastries, breakfast plates and specialty coffee drinks that rival Starbucks. Other menu items include an assortment of sandwiches, salads and smoothies.
After Labor Day, Angelique’s Baking Co. will expand to include plate lunches with homestyle favorites such as red beans and rice, baked chicken, shrimp stew, mashed potatoes and meatloaf, and lasagna.
Since opening, Mitt has been responsive to the needs of the community. Business hours have been extended to 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
