EDGARD — Schools are back in session, which means the St. John Parish 4-H program is eager to accept membership for the new year.

St. John 4-H is a positive youth development organization of the LSU AgCenter, offering youth ages 8 to 19 an opportunity to participate in hands-on projects in the areas of health, science, agriculture and civic engagement in a positive environment.

4-H has existed for more than 100 years and started building community clubs to help solve agriculture challenges. Now 4-H, the nation’s largest positive youth development organization, reaches youth in rural, urban and suburban communities.

Xavier Bell, 4-H agent in St. John Parish, said, “4-H provides opportunities for youth to explore, make a difference in their communities, network, find their spark, and so much more.” He looks forward to building the St. John 4-H program back to its glory days and is excited to provide meaningful opportunities for youth to find their sparks.

Bell mentioned that the parish program will hold traditional 4-H events such as cookery contests, poster contests, workshops and trips; but also will conduct events with the ultimate goal of helping youth thrive.

Bell said, “4-H is for everybody, from the youth to the adults, regardless of the project area. We have something for you!”
