Rhonda Lemons puts it well when she says good health makes for a more fulfilling and enjoyable life; however, adopting healthy behaviors and matching them with proper health care prevents many diseases that impact the entire community.

The St. John the Baptist Parish Department of Health and Human Services director made this point when discussing next week’s Health/Wellness Fair and Meet the Pharmacist Day — a free event open to all in the parish from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 13 at the St. John Community Center, 2900 Louisiana 51 in LaPlace.

“The Health and Wellness Fair allows us to provide invaluable health information to our residents, while also teaching them healthy habits,” she said.

The list of attractions includes benefits to people of all ages.

Residents can bring their prescriptions, vitamins and over-the-counter medicine and receive a free consultation with a pharmacist.

Attendees can learn about diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and behavioral health. There will also be exercise and meditation demonstrations.

St. John Parish Health Unit, St. John Parish Teche Action Clinic, Gem Drugs and the St. John Council on Aging are some of the local agencies providing help during the fair, which will include free health screenings for blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol.

Free flu shots are available, as well.

The St. John Parish Office of Fire Services will be on hand providing fire prevention tips and CPR demonstrations.

With the cost of medical treatment skyrocketing and the pressure of health care reform undeniable, now is the time to take preventative approaches to staying healthy.

Getting sick costs too much money, putting a strain on way too many. Any chance to receive first-class service from a variety of medical professionals in a no-cost environment can’t be missed. For more information about the fair, call 985-536-4955.
