Happy 245th Birthday America!

As family and friends gather to celebrate the Fourth of July this weekend, I can’t think of a better time to reflect on the sacrifices that many generations of men and women made to ensure our freedom.

And while our celebrations now often include the gathering family and friends, swimming, grilling and lots of red, white, and blue decorations, it’s important to recognize the brave men and women who have fought to uphold our country’s freedom since then – our Veterans.

Now more than we ever – especially due to the pandemic – we appreciate the opportunity of a holiday to gather and celebrate, but the stark reality is that many celebrations will be missing loved ones because of their ultimate sacrifice for our country. And while the idea of empty chairs and broken hearts contrast harshly against jovial celebrations, it is the reality for many American families.

So while we have the opportunity to celebrate our nation’s birth, and maybe even a day off of work, please remember those families in your thoughts and prayers. Please take time to explain to your children and grandchildren of the sacrifices so many Americans have made and continue to make, and please stay safe while enjoying your own celebration.

I’d like to invite everyone to attend the parish’s annual fireworks show. The St. John the Baptist Parish Independence Day Celebration will be held on July 1 from 6-9 p.m. Both sides of the river will have locations for festivities, with gatherings happening at St. Peter Catholic Church in Reserve and at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Edgard. Fireworks will begin at 9 p.m.
