Child shot in Luling; uncle arrested

Sheriff Champagne announces the arrest of Sterling Paul in relation to an April 15 shooting that occurred in the 100 block of Allie Lane in Luling, Louisiana.
On April 15, 2021 at around 11:30 p.m., a deputy was patrolling the area of Luling when he heard a gunshot and responded towards the area. While traveling down Allie Lane, the deputy was flagged down by a frantic mother carrying her child. It was then that deputies learned of her nineteen-month-old boy being shot in the leg.
Additional first responders arrived on scene and began lifesaving measures for the child. The nineteen-month-old was taken by helicopter to University Medical Center where he was taken into emergency surgery and is currently listed in “Guarded but Stable Condition.”
During the investigation into this heinous crime it was learned that Sterling Paul was at his sister’s residence in the 100 block of Allie Lane in Luling, LA. During the night, Sterling and his sister were involved in a verbal altercation. After the altercation, Sterling exited the residence and allegedly shot a firearm back into the home, striking his nineteen-month-old nephew that was playing in the living room during the incident.
Deputies were able to immediately take Sterling Paul into custody and seize two firearms that are believed to be involved in the incident,
Sterling Paul was charged with Aggravated Criminal Damage to Property, Negligent Injuring, and Aggravated Assault with a Firearm.
Sterling Paul is described as a 24-year-old black male that resides at 2101 Richland Avenue in Metairie, LA. He is being held at the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center with a $145,000 bond.
