The recently opened 1811/Kid Ory Historic House on Highway 628 in LaPlace welcomed its first field trip last Friday. Middle school students from the nearby Emily C. Watkins Elementary visited and were fascinated to learn that their school is built on the land that once comprised the plantation Charles Deslondes was from. These grounds were the birthplace of the largest slave rebellion in American history, as well as pioneering jazz musician Edward “Kid” Ory, representing some of the darkest and brightest aspects of Louisiana history.
