In honor of the Read Across America program and Dr. Seuss’ birthday, St. John the Baptist Parish Libraries will host programs to celebrate throughout the month of March. According to various studies, children who grow up in homes where there are many books readily available to them, tend to become more successful in school because reading promotes achievement in all subjects. As children read more books, their brains retain more knowledge. They also learn how to use new words and structure sentences that helps them to write and become better speakers. Parents who read with their children, help to create stronger family relationships because reading with children at home on a regular basis or taking visits with them to the library are a few fun ways to bond and teach them the benefits of reading more books.

The Norris J. Millet, Sr. Library (LaPlace) will have kits available for pick-up to make “Cat in the Hat Noses.” Children, ages 3 and up are welcome to participate in this program. Students in Pre-K through third grade are invited to stop by the Roland Borne, Sr. Memorial Library (Edgard) to pick up a grab and go bag featuring items to make a “Cat in the Hat Clock” or “One Fish, Two Fish Bowl.” For more information, please call 985-497-3453. The Leroy D. Williams Memorial Library (Reserve) will host a “Dr. Seuss Party.” Children of all ages are welcome to stop by and pick-up a party bag celebrating all things Dr. Seuss. Patrons of all ages are also invited to join us on our social media platforms as we discuss Dr. Seuss’ books, his famous quotes and important facts of his life throughout the month. For more information about the Reserve Library’s programs, please call 985-536-4107. The Frazee-Harris Memorial Library (Garyville) would like everyone to choose a book and spend some time reading. According to research, even reading for just six minutes can reduce stress. Take a picture of you and your family reading and post on your Facebook page. St. Patrick’s Day is known for parades, special foods, music, dancing and a whole lot of green. Join us as we celebrate at a few of our branches. The Garyville Library invites children, ages 3 and up to make “Leprechaun Puppet Pals.” Grab and go bags will be available for pick-up from March 9 to March 17. “A Very Leprechaun Storytime” will also be hosted by the Garyville Library. The story time will be posted on the library’s Facebook page on March 17 (St. Patrick’s Day). The LaPlace Library will host a “3D Paper Shamrock Craft” from March 1 to March 17. Kits can be picked-up during that time.

The Easter holiday will also be celebrated at St. John the Baptist Parish Libraries. The LaPlace Library invites children, ages 5 and up to make “Paper Plate Easter Egg Wreaths.” Supplies will be available for pick-up from March 22 to April 2. “Spring Bunnies” will be hosted by the Leroy D. Williams Memorial Library. Adult patrons are welcome to pick-up grab and go bags from March 22 to April 2. The Frazee-Harris Memorial Library invites adult patrons to make “Spring Basket Centerpieces.” All supplies can be picked-up from March 22 to April 2.
