As we celebrate Veterans Day Wednesday November 11, allow me to honor Lawrence Duhe of Reserve, Louisiana, whom I’ve known all of my life. He is a member of what Tom Brokaw calls, “The Greatest Generation.”

Last Saturday, I was privileged to be invited by his family to celebrate his 90^th birthday at the KC Home in Reserve. Lawrence is an ordinary man who lives a life of service to God, his family, his country and his community.

After attending Leon Godchaux High School in Reserve, he was employed by the Reserve Telephone Company and then later worked at Godchaux Sugar Refinery. He was drafted and entered the United States Army in 1955 and served two years, including 18 months in Korea. He was awarded the Korean Campaign Medal, a Good Conduct Medal, and a Medal for Marksmanship.

Upon his return to civilian life, he was employed by the Reserve Post Office as a mail carrier and retired in 1987.

In 1958, he married Edna Mae Ockman, who passed away in 2004. They raised five children (three girls and two boys).

His service to his community included being a member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion, having served twice as the commander. He was one of the first members of the Reserve Volunteer Fire Department and is a lifetime member.

For the past 30 years, he’s been a greeter and handyman at Don’s Grocery Store on Central Avenue in Reserve. He is always willing to help in any area, making sure that the customers are the most important.

My friend has never been recognized by the media as an influential political or community leader. However, I know that God is well pleased with him and he will receive his reward in Heaven.

The more I meet veterans like Lawrence, I realize why Tom Brokaw referred to them as “The Greatest Generation”.

Lawrence, have a great Veterans Day. You deserve it!
