My daughter, Kay, died two years ago. Only God knows how much Jeanne and I miss her. We grieve the loss of our precious gift from God that we enjoyed for a short 56 years. We grieve selfishly for our loss, but decided not to focus on her death, but to always remember and celebrate her life.
As Christians, we believe that death is only the end of our physical life, but our spirit will live forever in Heaven or Hell.
While she was in the hospital, I asked Kay if she remembered the day of her salvation. She didn’t hesitate and said that it was during a Get High on Life meeting in the East St. John gym. The speaker, an ex-Rice University football player, with approximately 800 people in attendance, asked if anyone wanted to be born-again and accept Jesus as their Savior. Kay and her sister Ronny both stood up and were born again.
Every morning as I pray for all of my family by name, I thank God for the short time we had Kay and know that I’ll see her again in Heaven.
As I reminisce on Kay’s life, I remember when she was 5 years old and riding her tricycle in the driveway, she fell. She had a serious cut over her left eye that required several stitches. Jeanne and I were worried about a scar that it might leave. Someone told us to rub cocoa butter on the damaged area every night. I religiously did that for over a year, and Kay never had a scar.
Kay’s death has left emptiness in our hearts that will never be filled, but God reminds me that as I go to the Cross every morning in prayer and gratefulness for what Jesus did, my sin scars have all been removed.
