Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor,
For the second time in the past few years my property taxes have increased, a lot. I live in a sugarcane field in a small town, not Beverly Hills. It cost me $85,000 to build my house, I am paying taxes on a house three times that amount.
It is unthinkable that a parish government would do this in a global crisis when people cannot pay their rent or buy groceries. Layoffs are just starting and if you do not pay this tax your home and property will be taken from you. The response from our officials is always the same when asked why; “we don’t have a choice”.
Maybe they do not have a choice, my question is what did you do to try and fight for us? Show me your emails to the Governor saying, “the people I represent can’t afford this right now”. Did you even try?
Where is this money being spent? Is it going to a good cause or is it paying salaries to a top-heavy bureaucracy? I think it is time for some conservative leadership in our parish, leaders that fight for the people. Maybe when I can afford to retire you will start seeing my name on a ballot. I promise you I would fight for the people and clean out the swamps of St. John the Baptist.
