I’ve known a certain couple, casually, for the past six years. They are married and have three children. The wife called me and gave me her husband’s phone number and asked if I would call him.

“I’m getting a divorce,” she said. “My husband is an alcoholic and needs help.”

I contacted her husband and I decided to meet with both of them. He is 38 years old and agreed that he needed and wanted help. I suggested that he go to a Christian program in Florida.

During our conversation, I asked if he had any resentment toward anyone he needed to forgive.

“Yes. My mother left me when I was 6 years old. I’ll never forgive her!”

“You’ll have a hard time getting sober unless you do.”

We prayed for him to at least ask God to give him a desire to forgive, sharing that the journey to freedom leads through the door of forgiveness.

I asked if he ever prayed the prayer that Jesus gave us – “The Our Father.”

“Many times,” he answered.

I then told him that he should quit saying it, because he didn’t understand when Jesus says we have to forgive others as God forgave us. Jesus pointed out that without forgiveness, there cannot be freedom.

Forgiveness is considered the ultimate class act. It sets us free to love and live, grow and mature, truly free. That’s what forgiveness does.
