LAPLACE — St. Charles Catholic High School seeks to be a second home to all its students, but some Comets stay well past their senior year. Such is the story for Carly Flynn, an alumna of SCC who was recently named the director of admissions and alumni for the 2020-2021 school year. “St. Charles has seen so many improvements and upgrades in the last 10 years, but it’s still kept the family atmosphere and fun that I remember from my years as a student,” Flynn said.“That’s what I’m excited to share with everyone. I want to get everyone on board with the awesome things we’re doing here.”

Flynn was an active student during her four years at SCC. She served as the student body president and as co-captain of the Starstepper Dance Team. She was also a member of the SCC Stagehands, Art Club, National Honor Society and Retreat Team.

“Being active is part of the St. Charles culture,” Flynn stated. “It’s a gift, really, to explore multiple interests as a young person and learn about time management and organization. I loved being able to meet different people and try new things at SCC.”

Flynn showed a talent for writing during her high school years, and her teachers awarded her the Outstanding English Graduate in 2009. Flynn credits her SCC English teachers, particularly Melanie Lohfink and Peggy Bordelon, with helping her to foster that talent and believe in herself. Flynn explained, “The teachers at SCC, in every department, make it a point to notice each student, to differentiate and to encourage according to their needs. They helped me believe that I had a responsibility to grow in this skill and the ability to make a difference with it. I’m so grateful to both of them, for a myriad of reasons.”

Flynn graduated in 2009 and went on to Southeastern Louisiana University, where she earned a BA in English. She earned a second degree, an MFA in Poetry, from Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon. She’s found success in the publishing world, placing poems in various literary journals across the country. Flynn has been teaching at St. Charles Catholic for the past six years in the English Department while also working with the Creative Writing Club, Retreat Team, Campus Ministry and various sponsorships of clubs and teams. In her new role, she’ll be managing the events and procedures of admissions, coordinating communications for the Comet community, and connecting with Comet alumni.

When asked about her goals for this role, Flynn said: “It’s a unique opportunity that we offer at SCC. Even as the students and their families are welcomed into our big community, the students are considered and guided uniquely as individuals. My teachers at SCC were instrumental in my upbringing. They fostered my talents, and they taught me to love God and serve others using those talents. I really haven’t seen that kind of attentiveness anywhere else I’ve been. My goal is to get the word out about how SCC has grown and begun to offer even more to its students, like our cutting-edge classroom technology, our gorgeous chapel, our new football stadium, etc. But I also have to get the word out about how willing and how ready we are to care for our students and to not only help them succeed in this life but ultimately help them to get to Heaven.”

Flynn’s position with SCC will involve the development of new and creative ways for SCC alumni to better engage with their alma mater as well as introduce new families to the mission of the school. Flynn looks forward to keeping her fellow alumni close to the school in meaningful ways and providing greater opportunities for SCC alumni to stay connected and supportive of their alma mater.

“Mrs. Flynn genuinely cares about St. Charles Catholic High School, our students and our alumni,” said SCC Principal Dr. Courtney Millet. “Carly has a strong understanding of our school’s mission and has many great ideas for connecting with the next generation of students making a positive and significant difference in our world. Her programmatic ideas will open up exciting opportunities for collaboration with our elementary schools. She knows our school well and will serve SCC admirably in the coming years. With a dedicated admissions and alumni director – especially someone who is so passionate about our school as she is – we believe our student body and alumni base will continue to grow, resulting in the strengthening of St. Charles Catholic High School in our community for many years to come.”
