Hurricane Preparedness Week was last week but it is not too late to make preparations. As we head into the start of natural disaster season amidst a pandemic, it’s that much more critical to be prepared!
With a shortage of food and necessities and social distancing measures in place, here are some supplies that we recommend having on hand (not hoard) should a disaster strike. If not already in your home, we recommend ordering these items via Instacart or Amazon to avoid crowded stores and spreading COVID-19. Home supplies can be delivered or picked up curbside at many stores.
- Bottled water and non-perishable food (at minimum a three-day supply)
- Flashlights (including extra batteries)
- Battery-powered radio (with backup batteries)
- First aid kit and medications (seven-day supply) and any other necessary medical items
- Sanitation and personal hygiene items
- Insect repellent and sunscreen
- Copies of personal documents (medication list and pertinent medical information, proof of address, deed/lease to home, passports, birth certificates, insurance policies)
- List of emergency contacts and printed recent photos of your family members, including pets
- Mobile phones with chargers (and backup chargers)
- Emergency blanket
- Baby supplies (bottles, formula, baby food, diapers)
- Pet necessities (collar, leash, ID, food, carrier, bowl)
- Tools for securing your home
- Extra clothing and shoes (including rain boots and poncho)
