LAPLACE — Nature lovers and thrill seekers will experience the beauty of the cypress swamp like never before when Zip NOLA opens down Peavine Road this fall.

Zip NOLA is a unique zip line experience that will cover approximately 2,000 linear feet over 77 acres of swamp. A 60-foot tall start platform will introduce adventurers to five zip lines, two suspension bridges and a spiral tree staircase.

Those who are unable or unwilling to participate can watch the zips and see the swamp from a new perspective on the observation deck.

Zip line construction is slated to begin May 11 and last two-to-three months. The retail location will be constructed on a six-month timeline, and locals can expect to see it unveiled to the public by late October or early November.

Zip NOLA will be able to accommodate a weight range of 60 to 280 pounds.

Business owner Tyler Richardson previously worked in the swamp tour business. Bored of the airboat business, Richardson yearned to give visitors a new way to immerse themselves in the South Louisiana swamps.

He thought of zip lines in Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic that brought him in contact with vibrant rainforests. Louisiana swamps offer the same type of beauty, drawing in tourists from around the world.

Richardson plans to educate riders on the swamp ecosystem, as well as the rich history and folklore of the town of Frenier.

“This is an ever-expanding industry. As they travel, people — especially young people — are looking for something a little more thrilling and exciting,” Richardson said. “Nature-lovers and thrill seekers alike would really enjoy this activity. I think it encompasses a broad spectrum.”

Alligators, turtles, waterfowl, wild boar and whitetail deer are just a few of the animals that can be viewed from a safe distance in the swamp surrounding Lake Pontchartrain.

“It gives you a bird’s eye view of the swamp, something most people haven’t seen unless they have taken a helicopter or a plane,” Richardson said. “What better way to view the old cypress of the swamps and beautiful Spanish moss than from the treetops?”

Co-owner Barry “BJ” Gros Jr. of Destrehan described Zip NOLA as a “swamp tour in a different medium.” He said the new business will be the only swamp-based zip line in the region.

“I’m excited to bring a new experience to the surrounding area,” Gros said. “I think this is an idea that has never been done around here. Across the nation, people are always looking for outdoor adventures to partake in.”

Zip NOLA has been in the works for three years. Most of that time has focused on permitting and ensuring the zip line meets the most rigorous safety standards.

Richardson said the state of the art technology includes magnetic braking devices with two safety braking apparatuses.

“We have quality equipment. It takes the user error out of it and kind of automates the process,” Richardson said. “You can rest assured that this is an extremely safe ride. Safety is our top priority.”

Richardson added that zip lining is an ideal outdoor activity for families and a phenomenal opportunity for companies looking for employee bonding activities.
