The St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested an adult and a juvenile May 6 after responding to reports of gunshots fired at a hotel in LaPlace.
The 17-year-old male juvenile from LaPlace was charged for possession of/dealing in firearms with obliterated number/mark (misd). Kobey Joseph, 20, of New Orleans was arrested and charged with resisting an officer (misd) and illegal carrying of weapons (misd). He also was wanted as a fugitive for the New Orleans Police Department.
At about 10 p.m. on May 5, officers responded to a hotel on U.S. 51 in LaPlace in reference to gunshots heard in the area. Upon arrival, deputies were canvassing a back parking lot when they heard multiple gunshots coming from the front of the hotel. Relocating to the front, officers observed an unknown male later identified as Joseph on the second floor walking down the stairs. Refusing to obey commands, the suspect became uncooperative, resisting officers. Eventually, Joseph was detained. Officers discovered a handgun in Joseph’s pants. They also learned Joseph was a fugitive for the New Orleans Police Department.
Officers then observed another unknown male, later identified as the juvenile, walking on the second floor down the stairs. He was immediately detained.
Through review of video surveillance, officers observed the juvenile place a handgun inside a trashcan on the second floor of the hotel. Officers recovered the gun with serial numbers obliterated.
Through investigation, officers learned the juvenile was firing shots into the air. No one was injured during the incident.
Joseph was transferred to NOPD May 6. The juvenile was released to his mother May 6.
