LAPLACE – Those who know Aaron Ursin of LaPlace describe him as a gentle giant. He’s a people’s person with a humble disposition, whether he is excelling in the classroom or shooting goals on the basketball court.

With senior year ending, Ursin will soon choose a college to shape his future. His choice can take one of three paths; East Texas Baptist University, Millsaps College in Mississippi and Lakeland University in Wisconsin have all put basketball offers on the table.

Ursin fell in love with the sport at a young age. He started out in the Riverside Academy rec league in elementary school before transitioning to AAU basketball and then to the Holy Cross varsity team, where he served as team captain.

In his senior season, Ursin averaged about 11 points, six rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game.

“I enjoy the camaraderie that comes along with it,” Ursin said. “That has to be what draws me to it the most. Everybody has to be on the same page and working towards the same goal.”

Whatever choice he makes, Ursin knows he wants to study journalism or mass communications. The journalism club at Holy Cross introduced him to reporting on campus events and developments in the sports world.

Aaron Ursin of LaPlace has received basketball offers from three schools.

Ursin was also part of the Holy Cross big brother/ little brother program, where he served as a mentor to fifth and eighth grade students. As a sophomore and junior, he was nominated for the Tiger Award, an honor extended to those who show strength of mind, heart, body and soul.

Ursin maintained a spot on the honor roll for all four years of high school. He was recently inducted into the National Society of High School Scholars. The organization recognizes students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, scholarship and community commitment. The NSHSS connects scholars to resources to help them develop strengths and pursue passions.

Navigating senior year’s abrupt end has been tough, but Ursin strives to remain positive and keep moving forward. His greatest inspirations are his family and his faith.

“I see how hard my family words for me, and they set an example that anything is possible through Christ who strengthens us,” Ursin said. “You can do anything with hard work.”

Ursin is the son of Melvin and Joy Ursin of LaPlace.
