Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Twenty years ago, in the middle of the summer, I spoke to a packed room of 45 to 50 men who were recovering drug addicts. I’ll never forget it. I was the speaker, dressed in suit and tie, and the AC was not working.

I always get excited when I address some of God’s favorite people. With enthusiasm, I delivered my message and after the one-hour session, I was soaking wet and ready to get out of the building.

Three young men asked if they could speak to me. I said, “Yes, but let’s get out of here!”

We walked onto Bank Street in New Orleans. One of the men asked, “How old are you?”

“Sixty-five,” I answered.

“Where do you get all that energy?”

“I eat a lot of Hershey bars.”

Then another asked, “Do you ever get burned out?”

Without thinking, I said, “No. That’s impossible.”

His response was, “Other counselors get burned out.”

Agreeing, I said, “That’s because they’re not too smart. They play with people’s heads, with no concern about the person’s heart.”

I then explained that I’m only a vessel for the Holy Spirit to work through me. How can I get burned out if I don’t do anything?

I don’t know if anyone got anything from that session, but I did. I was reminded that God’s ministry of Get High on Life is not about me. It’s about His Holy Spirit.
